LESSON 2 – FUNCTIONS OF +, – AND =

ACTIVITY 1 – IDENTIFICATION OF + 

+ means plus addition, sum or put together.

We put the sign the plus in between two numbers to show that the second number is added to the first number.

For example,

1 + 2

7 + 5

8 + 4, etc.

The sign looks like cross.

 

ACTIVITY 2 IDENTIFICATION OF – 

– means minus, subtraction, take away or difference.

We put the sign the minus in between two numbers to show that the second number is take away from the first number.

2 – 1

4 – 2

11 – 6, etc.

The sign looks like dash sign.

 

ACTIVITY 3 – IDENTIFICATION OF =

= means equal to.

We put the sign after the addition or subtraction of two numbers to show that they are equal to the third number.

 

For example,

5 + 1 = 6

1 + 2 = 3

7 – 5 = 2

5 – 2 = 3, etc.

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher uses flashcards and number chart to lead a counting from 1 – 190 with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction and follow the teacher’s lead to identify and count numbers.

3. Teacher displays number charts showing count in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.

Pupil’s Activities – Examine and identify the missing numbers.

4. Teacher displays flashcards showing mathematical signs (symbols) such as +, – and =.

5. Teacher lets pupils identify each sign and uses their responses to discuss the uses of the signs.

6. Teacher gives more examples to illustration the uses of +, – and = with names.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify addition, subtraction and equal to signs and use them correctly.

7. Teacher uses the number charts to introduce the lesson and guide the children to skip count correctly in 2s and 3s.

8. Teacher uses the activities in step 4 to guide pupils to add and count in 2s and 3s.
