PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. say the meaning of soil.

2. identify things found in the soil.

3. state the uses of soil to plant.

4. state the uses of soil to plants.

5. state the uses of soil to man.

6. state the uses of soil to animals.

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify some of the things in the soil.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Just like the air, soil is part of the surrounding and it is everywhere.

There are many things in our environment. We have people, plants and animals. We have houses, cars, etc. as parts of our surrounding. Also, soil, air and water are other parts of our surroundings.

 

THINGS FOUND IN THE SOIL

There are many in the soil. Things found in the soil depend on the soil sample or types. The following are the things found in the soil –

1. Air

2. Water

3. Leaf litter

4. Stone (small rock)

5. Death and Decay animals

6. Decay plants

7. Living organism – ants, worm, kuluso, etc.

 

LESSON 2 – IMPORTANCE OF SOIL TO MAN, PLANTS AND ANIMALS 

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL TO MAN

The importance of soil to man are as follows:

1. Soil is used planting rice, bean, yam, vegetable, tree and flowers.

2. Soil is used building houses, schools, hospitals, markets, etc.

3. Soil is used for making well and borehole.

4. Soil is used making building materials like blocks, roofing, etc.

5. Soil is used for building bridges.

6. Soil is used for feeding domestic animals.

 

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL TO PLANTS

1. The soil supports the plants to grow well.

2. The soil provides nutrients for the plants.

 

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL TO ANIMALS 

1. The soil provides food and water for the animals.

2. The soil provides home and protection for the animals. Many animals like ants, worm, rats, crab, etc. live inside the soil.

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEK LESSON ASSESSMENT 

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher gives each groups different soil sample.

4. Teacher guides the group to identify and to make a list of things found in the soil.

5. Teacher allows each group to state the things they identify and found in the soil.

Pupil’s Activities – The groups make a list of things found in their soil sample.

6. Teacher uses the groups presentation to introduce the lesson – Things Found in the Soil.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction.

7. Teacher merges the groups into three and give the first group chart showing building, farmland, etc. Second group chart showing animals grazing, drinking, and animal living in the soil and the third group chart showing growing plants.

8. Teacher allows the groups by guiding them to examine the chart, identify and discuss the importance of soil to man, plants and animals.

Pupil’s Activities – The groups state the importance of soil to man, plants and plants.

9. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board by using the lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the lesson summary by responding to the most of the questions and writes as instructed.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
