Two Dimensional Shapes (Primary 1)
MATHEMATICS
SMASE – ASEI PDSI METHOD
THIRD TERM
WEEK 9
PRIMARY 1
TOPIC: Two Dimensional Shapes
LEARNING AREA
- Lesson One – Sorting of Two – Dimensional Shapes
- Lesson Two – Identifying and Naming Two – Dimensional Shapes as Squares, Rectangles and Circles
- Lesson Three – Distinguishing Between Squares and Rectangles
- Lesson Four – Two – Dimensional Shapes in Our Environment that are squares, rectangles and circles
- Lesson Five – Revision, Quantitative and Test
TIME – 40 Minutes each.
LEARNING OUTCOME
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- identify a square, a rectangle and a circle.
- match and name a square, a rectangle and a circle.
- distinguish between squares and rectangles.
- mention square, rectangular and circular shapes in homes.
RATIONALE
Shapes are plane and solid shapes. Plane shapes in mathematics are any closed, flat, 2-dimensional shapes. They include triangle, quadrilateral and polygon. Plane shapes are made of straight lines, curved lines, or both straight and curved lines. All three dimensional shapes have the faces of two dimensional shapes.
In this lesson, the pupils will learn what plane shapes are and identify and name two – dimensional shapes in our environment.
LEARNING MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of shapes, drawings and cut-offs of squares, rectangles, circles. Empty tins of bournvita, milk, etc. Empty packets of sugar, chalk, etc.
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE
Plane and Solid shapes are all around us. These stop signs (all traffic signs are plane shapes), a sheet of paper, a paper, a stamp, etc. There are many kinds of plane Shapes.
In this lesson, we will focus on the following – squares, rectangles, cube and cuboid.
